Machynlleth Station Blooming Lovely Thanks To Community Effort

Floral displays at the station, judged best in Wales in the Keep Wales Tidy Awards earlier this year, are being supported by Machynlleth Girl Guides and Brownies, Mid Wales Tourism, and train drivers and conductors.

The Girl Guides and Brownies have planted flowerbeds and two tubs and decorated an old bicycle on the platform, and the flowers have been sponsored by Mid Wales Tourism, which is based in offices at the station building.

In addition, train drivers and conductors have contributed hanging baskets and other floral displays, which welcome train passengers to Machynlleth.

District Commissioner Ann Rapley said the planting work contributed towards the Guides' and Brownies' badges and community work.

"I think the girls have enjoyed the work, the results of which they see every time they come to the station," she added. "The floral displays seem to get better every year."

Dave Crunkhorn, Machynlleth Station manager, explained that ArrivaTrains Wales was keen to encourage community involvement in train services. "Apart from the excellent work by the Guides and Brownies, we also have pupils from the local school making murals for the platform and waiting room," he added. "Everyone is playing their part to make customers feel good about their journey to Mid Wales."

An additional attraction at the station is a floral display in the shape of a train, which was part of a garden that won Harlech Women's Institute a silver gilt medal at the recent Royal Horticultural Society Flower Show at Tatton Park. The garden was sponsored by Arriva Trains Wales.
