I had the pleasure of joining Kelly Pugh, Transport for Wales School Liaison Officer, on a journey that merged rail safety with interactive digital learning. The day began with a scenic ride on the train to Tywyn, followed by a brisk fifteen-minute walk that set the tone for what would prove to be a good learning experience for myself and the children of Ysgol Penybryn.
Upon arrival at Ysgol Penybryn, a Welsh Medium primary school, Year 5 and 6 pupils gathered together on the school hall floor with their Chromebooks. Their curiosity was immediately piqued as Kelly introduced us to two experienced Network Rail level crossing managers - Sarah Jones and Sarah Blockley.
Kelly wasted no time in setting the stage for learning. She and the level crossing managers launched into an online presentation that seamlessly drew the children into a discussion on rail safety and the critical importance of vigilance around level crossings. Every child was encouraged to contribute, answering questions and sharing their thoughts on safety measures.
After the presentation, the session took a delightful turn towards technology. Kelly switched the focus to Kahoot! projected on the screen, and in mere moments, the room itself became a hub of digital excitement. As children joined in on the quiz, some individually and others in small teams due to a cap of 44 participants, it was inspiring to see their competitive spirit emerge. Sixteen rail safety and level crossing questions had them eagerly tapping in responses, making the lesson both lively and memorable.
This interactive approach not only highlighted the dangers of rail crossings but also demonstrated the power of combining technology and teamwork in education. Witnessing these young minds engaged and collaborating reminded me why initiatives like these are so essential.
As we wrapped up the morning’s events, I thought of the enthusiasm of both the children and the experts involved. Experiences like this underscore the importance of blending practical safety education with modern digital engagement techniques. I’m excited to see how these inspiring moments contribute to enhancing both rail safety and community involvement along the Cambrian Railway.
Thank you to Kelly and the two Sarah’s for inviting me and I look forward to working with them in the near future.
