A Visit to the Vale of Rheidol Railway

Last Monday morning, I embarked  on another  journey from Newtown to Aberystwyth by train. One of my favourite rituals when visiting stations near the sea is to take a moment to walk up to the beach and watch the waves and seagulls dance along the shore. It’s a peaceful way to start the day and connect with the coastal charm.

After soaking in the seaside atmosphere, I made my way back across the car parks to the Vale of Rheidol (VoR) Railway, where I was scheduled to meet Claire Stott, the Commercial Manager. I had met Claire briefly at the All Aboard event in Borth last year and had also visited the VoR for the Railway Club book launch in the engine shed, so this visit was a wonderful opportunity to catch up and hear about the exciting plans for the railway’s future.

We met in the café, which was quiet at first but soon began to fill with familiar faces. Claire clearly knows many of the locals, and the friendly chatter made the atmosphere warm and inviting. The food looked and smelled absolutely delicious, I found myself wishing I hadn’t brought my own sandwiches. Even if you don’t take a train ride, the café alone is worth a visit.

Outside, preparations were underway for a train departure. Visitors were alighting, and the guard was readying the station for the next journey. Our conversation turned to the challenges faced over the summer, particularly the intense heat which led to the decision to use a diesel engine instead of the usual coal-fired locomotives.

Looking ahead, Claire told me about the festive season plans, including "Christmas at the Vale of Rheidol Railway." This magical event begins with a nine-mile heritage steam train round trip to Capel Bangor, followed by an immersive Christmas experience inside the Engine Shed Museum. It sounds truly enchanting and a perfect way to celebrate the season.

After saying goodbye to Claire and some of the friendly locals, I caught my train back to Newtown, feeling inspired by the vibrant community and the timeless charm of the VoR Railway.
