Community Rail Week, Sponsored by Rail Delivery Group, is Community Rail Network’s biggest annual Campaign. As a Community Rail Partnership this week is our opportunity to shine a spotlight on the work we do all year round in connecting communities to their railway through innovative projects and inspiring initiatives.
Â
Community Rail Week took place from 20 – 26 May celebrating the theme of ‘More Than A Railway’. As well as attending events alongside other Community Rail Partnerships and Wales on Rails we highlighted some of our key projects.
Rail Safe Friendly
A collaboration with Learn Live UK’s Rail Safe Friendly programme, raising awareness of the dangers of trespassing on the railways to children from nearly 100 primary and secondary schools along the Cambrian. Read more about this project here.
Â
Window Seater
Our award winning bilingual Cambrian Line Window Seater Audio Guide promotes sustainable and accessible travel, harnessing our heritage and culture and encouraging onward travel, supporting local social and economic development. Read more about this project here.
Mens Shed Newtown
Our work with Mens Shed Newtown aims to refurbish the empty building at Newtown railway station. This is a long term project which aims to see the station being brought to life once again with a multi-purpose use of space and volunteering opportunities for the community.
Wales on Rails
On 23 May we headed to Birmingham New Street with Wales on Rails, Community Rail Partnerships in Wales and borders, Transport for Wales and volunteers from the Great Little Trains of Wales, promoting sustainable travel and tourism in Wales and Borders. We had a fantastic time speaking to so many passengers, promoting our wonderful destinations and Wales on Rails Itineraries from Birmingham and Manchester. We gave out lots of our lovely postcards and Window Seater headphones.

Did you know Wales on Rails are running a Competition throughout June to WIN 1 of 3 pairs of Great Little Trains of Wales Gold Cards. Competition details can be found here Be sure to enter to be in with a chance of a spectacular summer on the rails in Wales.
Vale of Rheidol
We were pleased to have been asked to attend the Vale of Rheidol Community Day on Saturday 25 May alongside Network Rail, St John’s Ambulance, the Fire Brigade and Mountain Rescue.
The event was held in their spectacular new museum and we were delighted to speak to so many people interested in travelling the Cambrian Line and walking 100 miles of the Cambrian Coast, inspired by the Rail to Trail leaflets, which we had on display alongside our Window Seater Headphones, Cambrian Line Map Postcards and not forgetting our eye catching banner which is always a great talking point. There was also live music from the local choir, a ukulele performance and plenty of children’s activities.
