A few weeks ago, I headed to Platform 1 in Newtown to meet Neil Canham, the Active Travel Delivery Programme Lead at Transport for Wales (TfW). I was joined by Ezma, who runs the Platform 1 Menshed, community café, hen shed and is a TfW station adopter. While we waited for Neil to arrive, it was heartening to see local residents and travellers dropping by for a chat and a cup of tea.

Neil joined TfW a year ago, bringing with him a background at Sustrans and a deep passion for community-driven change. As we settled into the comfy seats by the door, Neil shared his vision for making walking, wheeling, and cycling central to everyday life in towns like Newtown.

Neil described the Welsh Government’s Demonstrator Town programme, working with Powys County Council as well as Transport for Wales, which is putting Newtown in the spotlight until at least 2027/28. It’s not just about infrastructure, it’s about changing how people feel about getting around.

He walked us through the key ingredients:

  • Safer crossings and wider footways to make walking easier

  • Accessible paths for wheelchair users and families with buggies

  • New cycling lanes with secure bike parking to help people feel confident choosing two wheels over four

  • Encouraging behaviour change through workshops, guided walks, and skills sessions designed to build trust, knowledge, and everyday habits

It’s all part of a bigger picture: helping people see active travel not as a chore, but as a natural and joyful part of everyday life.

Neil explained that engaging with Platform 1 is a key step in reaching the heart of Newtown’s community and railway users. Ezma’s transformation of an underused station space into a bustling café and social hub is a perfect example of grassroots creativity in action.

He also emphasised the importance of collaboration with local organisations, schools, and health services to embed active travel into daily routines.

Ezma shared her vision for expanding the station’s role as a community anchor. She’s full of ideas: intergenerational events, repair workshops, and storytelling sessions that celebrate Newtown’s heritage. Her focus is on creating welcoming spaces that foster connection and wellbeing.
