I recently took the train to Welshpool to visit the ‘Railway Show’ in the Town Hall. I was tasked with delivering Railway 200 bunting which was going to adorn the front of the building to welcome visitors.
The event was organised as part of our Railway 200 Community Resilience Grant which was awarded to Welshpool 1940s Weekend. The group also made calendars of ‘The Lost Railways of Montgomeryshire’ at the beginning of the year which sold out within days.

With local groups and model railway enthusiasts in attendance, there was a steady stream of visitors expected to attend, all keen to celebrate Montgomeryshire’s rail heritage.
Tables and layouts filled the room as volunteers finished last-minute touches. Model railways of all scales were being positioned, static photograph displays were arranged, and slideshows and film footage were ready to be looped on screens. The bunting looked good across the front, and people were already asking if it was open to come in and explore.
The event was organised by Martin Rich and Alan Crowe and was free to attend. Visitors were invited to make donations, with proceeds going to support the famous Welshpool 1940s Weekend, an annual celebration that brings the town to life with period dress, music, and events.
It was a warm, community-driven showcase of local railway history and model-making skills. If you missed this exhibition, keep an eye out for future events and the next Welshpool 1940s Weekend in September, it’s a great way to support local heritage and enjoy a slice of living history.
