Monday 8th June marked the opening of Platform 1, a space reborn as a vibrant hub for community engagement, creativity and railway heritage. I had the pleasure of attending a special 4pm event where the Community Cafe was officially opened.
From the moment we arrived, Ezma welcomed us with news that the team had been busy throughout the day with visitors. The station quickly transformed into a welcoming venue, complete with an array of delicious cake and treats prepared for everyone in attendance. Volunteers, families, Newtown Councillors, the Town Clerk, our Neil Scott and Claire Sterry from PAVO our host gathered, each adding their own warmth and significance to the event.
Inside, the station building tells a story of thoughtful community transformation. The newly refurbished space now hosts a Men’s Shed, an Arts Shed and a welcoming Community Café, where local residents and train travellers can enjoy tea, coffee and meals. Platform 1 are also Transport for Wales Station Adopters and the platform with ten stylish planters, isn’t just a stop along the journey but a destination for events, dialogue and connection.
This opening isn’t just about a building; it’s the start of a new era for Newtown Railway Station, where every event and initiative will continue to nurture local talent, promote cultural heritage and strengthen community bonds. I’m excited to see how this space evolves into a vibrant meeting point that reflects our local community.
The success of this transformation is a testament to the collaborative spirit and Ezma and her team of volunteers. With invaluable support from Transport for Wales, Network Rail and the Cambrian Railway Partnership Platform 1, stands as a beacon of community pride and innovation. Good luck Platform 1!
