Network Rail will be conducting essential track maintenance work throughout the month of May meaning the line between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth will be closed and buses will replace trains.

Works will start in the Newtown area to remove and replace the track, with the main track renewal work happening three-quarters of a mile on either side of Newtown station.

Further work, down the line, will also be carried out to the Severn and Carno Viaduct – the bridge that carries the railway across the River Severn in Caersws. This work will involve removing and replacing timber beams, selected piles, crossheads and metallic straps.

This work is essential to improve the resilience of the railway and the reliability of services.

Buses will replace trains between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth calling at Welshpool, Newtown and Caersws from Saturday 6 May to Sunday 21 May. If you are planning to travel by train in May, please check before travelling at https://www.journeycheck.com/tfwrail/
