Rail Safety Matters: Conversations from the Cambrian Line

One of the things I enjoy most about my role is meeting the people who work hard behind the scenes to keep our communities and railways safe. Recently, I caught up with Michael Norris from British Transport Police, Alison Barker, Network Rail's Community Safety Manager, and Kelly Pugh, Transport for Wales's School Liaison Officer. We met at Machynlleth Police Station, where Michael introduced us to PC Malcolm from the Neighbourhood Police and Prevention Team. Over a welcome cup of tea and a biscuit, we had a really positive discussion about rail safety along the Cambrian Line.

Rail safety and level crossing safety are incredibly important on the Cambrian Line. We have more than 200 level crossings, many smaller unmanned stations and halts and long sections of single track. While these features are part of what makes our railway unique, they also mean that people need to be aware of the dangers and take care around the railway at all times.

It was great to hear about the work Alison and Kelly have been doing over the summer. I briefly caught up with Alison at the Royal Welsh Show, but she was so busy talking to visitors and demonstrating the virtual reality rail safety headsets that we didn't get much chance to chat. The interest from the public showed just how important this work is.

Both Alison and Kelly spend a great deal of time visiting schools and speaking to young people about rail safety and the dangers of level crossings. Education is one of the most effective ways to prevent accidents and help keep people safe.

Michael also spoke about his work across the Cambrian Line and the challenges of policing such a large rural railway. It was reassuring to hear how closely British Transport Police, Network Rail, Transport for Wales and local police officers work together to promote safety and respond to concerns.

One of the highlights for me was seeing a new video Alison has been working on featuring Jack the Rail Safety Dog. The video is both fun and informative, with Jack taking his owner on a journey and teaching him all about staying safe near the railway and at level crossings. It is a brilliant way of getting an important message across, especially to younger audiences. Jack even has his own Instagram following and is already proving very popular.

These meetings are always valuable because they remind me that rail safety is not just about infrastructure and regulations. It is about people working together, educating communities and ensuring that everyone gets home safely. The Cambrian Line is a fantastic railway, and by continuing to raise awareness of rail and level crossing safety, we can all play our part in keeping it safe for passengers, staff and local residents alike.
